I would love to go to a Zen monastery, but there's no way I'm getting up at 3, 4 in the morning from some big gong, then sitting in meditation, then eating quickly, then sitting some more, etc.
Zen supposedly talks about flowing instead of being rigid, no rules, seeing that everything is subjective and impermanent. If so, why are they so strict with these dumb rules? I love Zen, but not these man-made rules of when you should wake up or eat. In actuality, everybody is different, bodies have different time rhythms and when they feel comfortable they should eat or sleep.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this, but in my humble estimation, a Zen monastery that doesn't run according to the vast scientific research on sleep, food, etc. is simply following in the dark, like they did for thousands of years before them. Not very enlightened, if you ask me.
