The Real Shobogenzo: BEWARE

Dahui's Real Original, the First Shobogenzo:

237.  A monk asked master Shuilu, “What should a student apply his mind to?”  Shuilu said, “To apply the mind is to miss.”

The monk said, “How is it when not arousing a single thought?”  Shuilu said, “A useless fellow.”

The monk said, “How is this thing preserved?”  Shuilu said, “Beware.”

The monk asked, “When meeting on a narrow road, what then?”  Shuilu grabbed him by the chest and gave him a shove.

ewk note: Compare this sutra to any other teaching from any other philosophy or religion, and you find no comparison is possible. People doing some calculus of virtue, people doing some practice of refinement, people doing some worship of what is holy, none of it compares to this Zen business. Still, that's something a high school book report would tell you... and we know you have to pass beyond study... so, what are you studying?
