Foyan Qingyuan: Why not ask about your own intention? [meta anti-troll forum post]

If you don't ask, you won't get it; but if you ask, in effect, you've slighted yourself. If you don't ask, how can you know? But you still have to know how to ask before you can succeed... Remember the story of the ancient worthy who was asked, "What was the intention of the Zen Founder in coming from India?" Amazed, the ancient said, "You ask about the intention of another in coming from India. Why not ask about your own intention?"

Wandering Ronin commentary and questions: Here, Foyan teaches a very powerful lesson: Why not ask about your own intention? This is one way how you can identify who is serious about Zen and who is not. People who aren't serious about the teachings run around focused on other people and their behavior before they have anything at all to do with introspection. They reveal themselves as charlatans and frauds by not understanding the first teaching of Zen, which is to drop all concepts at once. They reveal themselves as those who carry and build on concepts every step of the way, unaware of their folly. Can their words be trusted if they are mired completely in delusion?

A few things regarding the current state of the forum and our newest temporary trolls, /u/chadpills and /u/FlameBlood. Please take note that according to Foyan, these two aren't students of Zen whatsoever. Chadpills is busy setting up a religion around himself, unaware that his ego is merely blaspheming the Dharma and the teachings. FlameBlood is an outright hypocrite, trying to gatekeep others from what he thinks is 'teaching' while trying to teach me with nearly every single word he offers. Don't worry too much about these temporary trolls; people who aren't serious about Zen tend to fall by the wayside once they run out of energy. Carry on, and lets continue discuss and debate matters of Zen.
