Confused about Zen and Bodhisattvas

I have a novice understanding of Zen, but from what I have gleaned thus far it isn't as much about ethics as it is about having a perspective on reality (my phrasing). Whenever I read Thich Nhat Hanh or similar teachers though, they always talk about a sort of duty to be/become a bodhisattva and freeing other from suffering through love and compassion. These are good goals, but I don't understand were the "Zen" comes from in that part of their teachings, and I'm wondering if I'm missing something or conflating some things.
