Some questions about koans

I have studied Buddhism for a while, but am still confused every time a person uses koans or analogy but don't directly address the problem. I can foresee some of you will try doing that to me in this thread too. Anyway, I wonder if you are still struggling when someone doing that with you? I understand the point of confusing the speaker, but when is confusing the speaker is necessary for them, and when is that confusing unnecessary (and potentially harming the study)? By its nature, the koan has no answer and confusing, so would a master still be confused with a new one too?

I also find this article about Daoism interesting: Zhuang Zi: A funhouse mirror for the soul
