The Oldest Zen Masters?

I'm no so much as interested in their texts, but about who they were and where they came from. I like seeing the different passages posted and disected, and discussed, but that just intrigues me even more about who these people were and where they came from. The stories and sayings I read are like portals into another time and world that is hard for me to grasp (the whole monk, temple, travelling far and wide to seek these people out) culturally. Its so foriegn, yet unbelievable. I feel like the passages everyone posts, paint a good picture in my head though, and I would like to know more about them, based on how whoever answers sees them.

Who is generally attributed to as the first?

Besides that, who do you relate to on an individual level?
