Provenance of a zen (?) story

I remember reading this story as a teenager and was wondering if anyone could confirm it as a traditional Zen parable.

As I recall, the story goes that an old master is dying. His best student is distraught and so the master tells him that, on the night of his death, the student must go to the temple gates at midnight. The master dies, the student goes to the gates at the appointed time, but nothing happens. Thereafter, though, every time the student passes through the gate, he is reminded of his master's teachings.
