What little I know about zen is mainly from Alan
Watts, several of you most likely know him. I was
asked to create a thread about this topic from
WanderingRoninXII after he recommended that I read
it. After reading transmission of mind and hearing
plenty from zen practitioners I would say I have
gained a better understanding of zen. I realized just
how often I get into a zen state and after reading
about the more conceptual ideas that are actually
ani-conceptual or rather anti discriminatory (not a
race or gender idea but saying that this is that and
that is this) the idea that all things is made up of one
substance is a very scientific idea in fact it is arguably
true. And there is the idea of the void and it’s relation
to the mind or much rather that the mind and the
void are the same. This is only one of the ideas that
are paradoxical another is the idea that in order to
become a Buddha you must not want to become a
Buddha.
If the zen idea of enlightenment is to detach yourself
from desire then you must not want to desire not to
have desire. I have seen again that I see seemingly
paradoxical concepts and I realize now while yes they
technically are paradoxical ways it is impossible for
vocabulary to describe enlightenment thus the way
towards enlightenment would seem not to make that
much sense to a new comer. How do you decide that
you will let yourself commit a spontaneous action?
The secret is not to think about it, this goes back to
the idea of not being able to describe enlightenment.
There is in zen a way to gain enlightenment that can
not be described only done. How do you commit a
spontaneous action? You simply do it. And at first
glance this seems to not be logical which if your
looking at it from a confined conceptual view it is but
being able to let into the void and get into a zen state
simply is how it is. There is just doing, to be present,
how else would we be able to drive a car if we couldn’t
act without thought? Enlightenment is something
that cannot be described or attained by traditional
means. To empty the mind in zen does not actually
make you less conscious it actually allows you to have
an external mind, one that is one with your
environment.
