How did the Zen masters become Zen masters without knowing what Zen masters teach?

Back in the old days there was no internet! Was tough to find a book.

And who anyways was the original Zen master?

What came first? What Zen masters teach or the Zen master?

Do monks living in monastaries have anything to do with all this?

Why are all the books about what Zen masters teach written by monks who lived in monastaries there whole lives?

Can anyone here name 2 Zen masters who weren't monks and who never lived in monastaries?

Where does this idea of monks come from?

Where does the idea of monastiscism come from?

If Zen masters hated Buddhism so much why were they monks?
