Zen Master Yunmen - Urs App - opinions on the text and scholarship?

Curious what people's take was on the representations and scholarship in this one - the updated edition seems to have just been released and I gave it a spin. Reads well but there's some areas where the author has some consistent / repeated opinions on what Yunmen is trying to convey in the text. Quick example:

Someone asked Master Yunmen, "What is Chan?"

The Master replied, "That's it!"
The questioner went on, "What is the Dao?"
The master said, "Okay!" (1)

Footnote:

(1) Yunmen's answers often simply confirm the quality of a question and pus the student to pursue it thoroughly by himself.

This is actually a good example of one of the themes that Urs points out - encouraging the student to face it on their own, blocking their attachment to external means, cutting off their pursuit, etc. That reads well with the theme of texts from other masters, but in context seems a big leap - putting words in Yunmen's mouth so to speak.

I'm not across the scholarship in this space well enough to have a feel for it so looking for opinions.
