A few weeks ago, I bought Instant Zen and read some things Foyan said. I read the book again, because I felt maybe I missed something. I will attempt again this weekend. Do you guys just read these books, and kinda smirk and smile through them or is there more to it?
It seems like most of the things that Foyan said were common sense. The only think that that I read that seems to be stirring trouble in me is his words about not mounting the donkey. Am I just reluctant to accept it as truth? If I decide to get off the donkey, would that mean letting go of years of study and practice of method?
Does reading what zen masters said require a different approach? How would you recommend I approach the study. Is a specific set/setting/attitude required?
