Gateless Gate Case 3: Gutei's finger

Case: Whenever asked about Zen, Gutei would simply raise a finger. He had a boy attendant who once was asked what his master was teaching. The boy raised his finger as an answer. Hearing of this, Gutei seized the boy and cut off his finger with a knife. The boy ran away screaming in pain. At that moment Gutei called him. When the boy turned his head, Gutei raised his finger. Suddenly the boy was enlightened.
On his death bed, Gutei told the attendance: "I received this finger from my Master. I used it all my life but I could not exhaust it".

Mumon commentary: The enlightenment of the boy has nothing to do with a finger. If you understand this, Gutei, the boy and you yourself will all be run through with one skewer.

koalazen commentary: A finger, a tomato, simple things. We are not surprised by their familiar light. The light of a finger, the light of a potato, the light of the sky, the light of cars, the light of sounds, the light of thoughts... THE LIGHT! The light without a name, the light of light and names. It is Buddha nature, what Gutei has been showing all along!
