The Sayings of Layman P'ang: 26
Open or Closed? Pg 61
One day, when the Layman came to visit him, Pu-chi saw him coming and closed the door to his room, saying, "I don't care to see old man know-it-all today."
The Layman said, "Sitting alone and talking to yourself, you won't offend anyone, eh?"
Pu-chi started to open the door to come outside when the Layman grabbed it from him and slid it open, saying, "So, who's the know-it-all? The Master or me?"
Pu-chi said, "Setting aside the question of whoh;a the know-it-all, as the door slides back and forth, how do you know whether it is open or closed?"
The Layman said, "This is the kind of question that chokes the life out of people."
Pu-chi laughed out loud and the Layman said, "You've been playing me for a fool all along!"
Some people come to the forum with questions. Some come with knowledge. Many accuse people here of feeling superior, of being obstinate, and of a variety of other things that don't exist in the visible spectrum.
When we name others as this or that, who is the know-it-all?
Who here knows when the door is open? Who knows when it's closed? A simple check outside tells you the time of day, who do you play as a fool?
