Santa Clause Exists

3 kids. Last year the oldest worked out the "truth" of santa, well, at least one did and the information dissemiated through the van and they were all changing "mom & dad are santa".. only the youngest has the memory of a goldfish and didn't really understand the words

following christmas, the older child knows, and the middle child made an interesting switch, after all year of knowing, he just decided without any conversation with us, to start believing in santa again. it was just more fun.

and i found myself saying to the oldest, as i was realizing it myself, that "santa does exist" .. you see those presents? you see those stockings filled? santa did do that. we can go to stores and read books about santa and you can walk up to arbitrary people and ask "does santa exist" and if they look at you the right way they will say "of course he does!". Just some of us see the other side of the coin. Like a magician doing a trick.. the magician sees both sides of it but the audience sees only one. But it's still "magic", just depends on your point of the view. and the entertainment and smiles and everything that comes with it is real. so what part of the "magic" isn't "real" just because we know how the trick works?

And even when you know how the trick works, you find yourself playing along. giving credit to the magical being way above us (in the north pole). Doing things you might not otherwise. Giving generously, decorating the house whether you really want to or not. Forcing yourself into certain behaviors to adhere to the illusion you want to present. Giving credit to an external entity for all the resultant joy that comes about. Even though "you" did everything. Or "you" in combination with the collective societal believe that Santa is important. It'd be hard to decorate the house if every walmart for a million miles wasn't selling you christmas gear and advertising it's importance. Hell, even if christmas isn't your bag at all, you might find yourself decorating or doing other things to go along with it all.

The people who say santa clause doesn't exist are just looking at it from a different point of view than the people who say he does. But from a birds eye view both existing and not existing are two sides of the same coin. and none of those viewpoints is right. none of them is correct. Just 3 different ways of looking at the same coin. as heads. as tails. as a coin.
