We all know that one of the main problems with Christianity is that you can study the Bible and then pick and choose exactly what you want to hear from it, a la carte, and ignore the rest. Then, you can take whatever passages you want and interpret them however you see fit. That is why there are so many schisms and branches going on all throughout the history of Christianity, of course.
The exact same thing is obviously true in the Zen community. We all have access to the Zen texts and words of the Zen masters and such, and we all can pick and choose what we believe or ignore. Then, there are different translations of the same texts of course, which can even further confuse things to a degree. Some people believe that zazen and mindfulness have nothing to do with Zen, and others believe that Zen cannot effectively be practiced without it. I've got an idea; how about we all just get up out of each others business and we stop telling others how to practice Zen? You do what you need and what works for you, and I'll do the same. Is that so hard to live and let live?
