Linchi on taking a shit

Followers of the Way, the Dharma of the Buddhas calls for no special undertakings. Just act ordinary, without trying to do anything particular. Move your bowels, piss, get dressed, eat your rice, and if you get tired, then lie down. Fools may laugh at me, but wise men will know what I mean

From 'The Zen Teachings of Master Lin-Chi', t. Burton Watson

jeowy note: I think what attracts a lot of us to Zen is the idea that it's something 'special' or 'other' - some kind of secret knowledge that will raise us up to become something greater. This idea needs to be abandoned in order to understand the absolute simplicity of Zen, which is found in ordinary daily activities.

'wise men will know what i mean' is a nice touch. I think it's a reminder that no special doctrine or teacher is necessary in order to understand this basic truth. It can be known intuitively, by anyone with a sincere and inquiring mind.
