I don't understand this.

1. Once our master requested a short leave of absence and Nan Shan asked where he was going.

"I'm just off to gather some vegetables."

"What are you going to cut them with?"

Our master held up his knife, whereupon Nan Shan remarked: "Well, that's all right for a guest but not for a host."

Our master showed his appreciation with triple prostration.
