EVERYTHING IS ONE: Can the Great Schism of the Zen community be healed?

The Zen community should be a place for debate, learning, teaching and at the very least, entertainment. How do you feel about this community and the people here? Do you feel that it is worthwhile for you to be here, and if so, what do you feel is the core purpose of the community for you? Below, I would like to add a few of my own reasonable guidelines that could help the community to heal the divide between the two schools of thought prevalent here.

  • Everyone should be treated with compassion and respect. We should try our hardest to avoid calling each other names and slandering people with differing opinions, and we should also rise to defend others who are being attacked. At the very least, shouldn't Zen teach us to be compassionate towards others? If not, what is Zen really worth in the end?

  • Both original Zen and modern Zen have their benefits. We cannot get far in Zen if we are constantly disparaging and debasing the other side of the debate. There is really no reason to fight, because we should be using our time to learn from each other. If there is no peace in the community, are we all really setting a good example for Zen? What would someone new here think?

  • We can learn from everyone here. Everyone here has value, and everyone has something to share. The more open our minds, the more we can gain and ultimately give back to others. The differences in opinion and reasoning are what makes this community interesting and lively. There is much to learn, and many who will offer guidance freely if asked.
