Buddha, Mind, War Drums

From Blyth's Zen and Zen Classics:

The Prefect Ri was seated together with Xitang, from Mazu, when two monks came from Kozei. Ri asked them, "Has Mazu some new words of instruction?

One monk said, "Mazu sometimes says our mind is the Buddha."

Ri said, "There is some mistake there," and asked the other monk, who said, "He sometimes says it is not mind, nor Buddha."

Ri said, That's going altogether too far," and asked Xitang his opinion.

Xitang called out to Ri, and when Ri answered, Xitang said, "The war-drums are beating, the war horns are blowing."

.

ewk ? note: I was reading this morning about how the men's fashion subreddit is the welcoming place r/Buddhism always hoped it would be. This dialogue, involving an heir of Mazu's and students of Mazu's, is not welcoming at all. How is it that some people are welcomed by it, nonetheless?

And for those who do not feel welcomed by it, how do we welcome them?
