A few important questions for the Zen community regarding compassion, the benefits of our practice for others, and the religious aspects of Zen.

I would like to point out a few topics for the community that I feel should be discussed in an effort for us all to share what we can on the subjects, or for us to even get a better understanding on them. Please share your thoughts and opinions about any of these, or even feel free to offer potential solutions on these matters that you feel could benefit the Zen community in some way.

  • The subject of compassion in Zen is becoming somewhat of a contested issue within the community. What are your thoughts on compassion in Zen? Is our practice and understanding of Zen ultimately leading towards having more compassion for others, or is this subject of compassion irrelevant to Zen in your opinion?

  • We practice and follow Zen for many different reasons of course, but many of these reasons can seem to take a self-oriented direction. If helping others is part of your reason for practicing Zen, what is it in your practice that is intended for the benefit of others? Do you practice with the intent of saving all sentient beings, or to ultimately help others in some way? If not, why is this the case for you?

  • Zen, or even Zen Buddhism depending on your preference, is one of the world's major religions, but it seems that the religious aspects of Zen are rarely discussed here in the community. What exactly is the religious aspect of Zen, if any, in your opinion? Is the religious aspect of Zen important in your practice, or do you see Zen as somehow separate from religion?
