From The Sayings of Zen Master Linji Yixuan:
A monk asked "What is the essence of the Dharma?"
The master shouted.
The monk bowed.
The master said "This monk is a worthy opponent!"
A monk asked "What is Buddha-nature?"
The master said "There is no Buddha, no sentient beings, no past, no present. One who attains the Buddha-nature, attains it instantly. No time is required, no practice, no realization, no gain, no loss. Throughout the day, there is no other teaching than this. And if there were a teaching to surpass this, it would be a dream, a fantasy."
A monk said "You bald old man! You can't tell the difference between good and evil!"
The master said "You are a true follower of the Way."
