Case 14
Nanquan saw the monks of the Eastern and Western halls arguing over a cat.
So Nanquan picked up the cat and said,
“Everyone! If you can speak, you can save the cat.
If you can’t speak, I kill the cat!”
No one could answer
Nán Quán chopped that cat.
Later that evening, Zhào Zhōu returned
Nán Quán brought this incident up to Zhào Zhōu
Zhào Zhōu took off a shoe and put it on his head and walked out.
Nán Quán said, “If you had been there, the cat could have been saved!”
