The zazen I speak of is not learning meditation. It is simply the Dharma gate of repose and bliss, the practice-realization of totally culminated enlightenment. It is the manifestation of ultimate reality. Traps and snares can never reach it. Once its heart is grasped, you are like the dragon when he gains the water, like the tiger when she enters the mountain. For you must know that just there the right Dharma is manifesting itself and that, from the first, dullness and distraction are struck aside.
Zen Master Dōgen [1200-1253]
Wandering Ronin commentary: Those who were never born cannot die or truly be troubled by myriad things. There is nothing to learn and nothing to gain, but here we are causing ripples in the water! What layman would dare enter the ocean with such a commotion going on between these sea beasts? One has come to learn and share, and one has come to guard and hinder, but neither have managed to say a word.
