You want a citation?
How about Wikipedia's article on Zen. It is the most thoroughly vetted and supported article of its type on the planet. And yes, the article cites respected scholars who cite the same Zen texts that we do. If you are looking for an intelligent interpretation of the texts then this is where you get it.
You will not get an intelligent interpretation of the texts from these fellows on /r/zen who hide behind anonymity. They will tell you whatever story suits their fancy. It isn't like they are invested in their reputations after all. Right? So just ignore them.
That said, reading will not suffice. Anything you read will only be seen through the filter of your own vastly limited understanding. So learn to meditate already and see for yourself. You'll be glad you did.
