If one focuses only on the breath going in and out or on a sound without judging it, without trying to conceptualize it just following the breath in and out, just being aware of it and sometimes becoming aware that you are aware of something else lets say your shoulder starts itching, or you start to think about the past future or you feel drowsy or cold but as soon as you realize it you let go and go back to being aware of the breath. Just holding your awareness on your breath all the time with maybe a few interruptions here and there becoming aware of other phenomenas but returning awareness to breath when one realizes that the mind has drifted away from the breath. Sometimes, using the same principals as explained before, but using other things as anchors instead of breath like sound or sight or sensation. And sometimes meditating with an awareness that changes object from now and then, alternating the awareness between sight, sensation, breath, thought .
Is this Samatha (calming the mind) or can it be considered Vipassana or Zazen meditation leading to insight?
