A monk said, "One of the ancients stood in the snow and cut off his arm. What truth was hee seeking?"
Taisui said, "He didn't cut off his arm."
The monk said, "He cut it off! Why do you say that he didn't?"
Taisui said, "He was enjoying being in the snow."

ewk ? note: Zen texts are full of this kind of thing. Zen Masters don't rely on history any more than they rely on doctrine. No reliance, no tracks; how can you fail to recognize them?
