No Function, No Existence

Browsing through Dahui's Shobogenzo, I've stumbled upon this one again.

I've posted it already three months ago, but felt like sharing it with you guys again because that's just too brilliant to forget.

Chan master Guoyi of Jingshan was summoned to court and honored by Emperor Daizong of the Tang dynasty.

One day the master, in the inner courtyard, saw the emperor and stood up.

The emperor said,

“Why do you get up?”

He said,

“Patron, how can you see me within walking, standing, sitting or lying down?”

Dahui said,

“Yet how can you see Guoyi except within walking, standing, sitting, and lying down?”

If there is no function, then it is not existent.

People say that "zen is this" and "zen is not that"!

In my opinion, there is no "single statement" that could describe or explain zen.

It's rather a platform standing on different pillars which are different and seem to be somehow contradictory.

Why's that?

It's because zen is not delivering a single message of truth. It's beyond true and not true!

It's about liberation of mind. How could it liberate your mind by giving you a "truth"? That's absurd.

As soon as you are clinging to anything (yes, anything!) you're bound!
