The oft touted view is that Vesak day, is just another day and as such, all days should be seen in a sense as one and one's behaviour and conduct should rise to a higher standard all day, every day.
Which is nice in theory, and I tend to agree with it, however people being people, reminders are often a good idea.
With the Christmas season coming around, those who already have their hearts fixed firmly on compassion and accomplishment continue on as normal.
For those not quite there, a reminder that hey, maybe you should be a bit more caring and giving if only to your friends and family if nothing else, and to appreciate whatever fortunes you may have while being understanding is probably a good idea.
It isn't as if Chan and Zen don't acknowledge special events, days, periods and other time based phenomena, but many attempt to throw everything away and forget what the purpose may well be behind some of these events.
