If you wish to understand my Zen, to meet me eye to eye, and see me face to face, you must first pass through my great legion unscathed.
I've signaled for them, and they quickly arise in front of you for the task I have appointed. To guard the entrance of the gate, so that none may pass. They come with thick clouds and great darkness, to blind the eyes of the one who looks upon them, and stop the ears of the one who catches wind of their sound. None can tire them. They cannot be stopped. I have added to them shield and sword, and with great speed, they cut off the passersby. Bow and arrow in hand, the archers take aim. The ones who escape the sword are ended by the arrow. The ones who escape the arrow fall into the trap in front of the gate.
Who can pass my great legion without being caught in my net? I give the order, and they rise up instantly, to scatter and confuse the opposing forces, and with might and unmatched strength, they send the enemy running in every direction. To the east, they find an burning fire! To the north, a sword! To the west, a poison-tipped arrow! To the south, a narrow way that is too narrow to pass through! Confounded, the enemy darts through the battlefield. With haste, their feet slip on the rocks. And as you look before your eyes, you see the clouds and thick darkness, for my legion comes with clouds and thick darkness.
The man who walks through this great legion without stumbling shares eyes with me, and I with him; all the others go down to the pit, and are swallowed by the sword.
Listen closely! A bundle of words; and a group of phrases; sends the whole body to hell. If your practice is strong and continuous, you won't stumble into it.
A fleeting dream veils weary eyes. To the one who reads and understands; you know my Zen like the back of your hand, and command my forces alongside me. To such a valiant one, my legion is no legion at all!
