"The works of Kuei-feng Tsung-mi (780-841) played a crucial role in shaping the Sung conception of the Ch'an lineage. Tsung-mi was the first to conceive and name the "Ch'an lineage" in China as an extended clan that had many legitimate branches stemming from the first patriarch Bodhidharma" (Peter N.
