The Impassable Barrier of Fo-hsing

Cleary omits any biographical info, as per usual, and maybe even got the name wrong? referring to Fo-hsing T'ai when it might be Fo-hsing Fa-tai?

Fo-hsing:

Even if you attain realization of the emptiness of persons and things, this does not measure up to the way of Zen.

Even if you embody complete function and complete perception, this is still not the essential wonder of Zen

You must break through the impassable barrier and get to know the opening beyond.

.

ewk book note index -

  1. If you know, then your conduct is irreproachable.
  2. If you don't know, then there is nothing in your conduct to redeem you or propel you into knowing.

This sort of argument is in direct opposition to philosophy and religion in general, which both hold that actions have some measurable quality, and often go on to argue that intention has a similar measurable quality.

Fo-hsing doesn't agree with philosophy and religion. We'll need a third category.
