Infamous Deshan: Crushing False Zen Enthusiasts

As for you, just don't get obsessed with

thoughts of reputation and appearance,

terminology and rhetoric,

maxim and meaning,

objective representation,

function and principle,

good and bad,

ordinary and holy,

grasping and rejection,

focus on objects,

defilement and purity,

light and darkness,

being and nonbeing.

If you get this way, only then are you an unaffected individual.

Then even Buddha cannot compare to you; even the Chan founders cannot compare to you.

This is a simple and plain instruction from an actual zen master, cited by another actual zen master, written down in a book from an actual zen master.

It's also a kick in the balls for all of us here who reject partly or completely the instructions from master Deshan.

Let me quote something for you clever ones who might want to differentiate between different houses or schools of zen - said earlier in that speech of Deshan:

Even if Bodhidharma were to come here, he would just tell you to be without affections; he would tell you to not be contrived.

Before anybody opens his mouth again to present another half-baked "teachings" from the Watts'es and Warners and Soto-Salesmen of this world, you might remind yourself that masters like Deshan, Dahui or Yantou would "give them a beating" and call them "little whores", considering to "feed them to the dogs".
