Confused about meditation, help please?

So I am confused about meditation. I am mostly interested in the kind of meditation that has enlightenment as it's main focus. As I understand it there are two types of meditations, one is samatha(concentration) and the other is vipassana(insight).

I have been practicing meditation for a long long time now, however all I have been doing is to be aware of my breath and as soon as my mind wanders I gently return my awareness back to my breath. However from what I have read this is only samatha meditation.

To do vipassana/mindfulness one first focuses on just ONE object like the breath for a while, then one stops focusing on the breath or something specific and just simply become aware to whatever happens or arises, wether it be thoughts, feelings, sensations or whatever and just be aware of them in a non-judgemental way.

I have personally been trying to hardcore focus and be aware of just my breath, and whenever anything arises like thoughts, feelings or sensations I have been aware of them in a non-judgemental way but I have always tried to bring back my focus and awareness to only my breath. Have I been doing it wrong this whole freaking time only doing samatha meditation this whole time?
