A monk inquires about a holy temple

A monk asked, "A holy temple-what is it like?"
Joshu said, "A maiden with her hair rolled up [ie., a virgin]."
The monk said, "Those inside the holy temple-what are they like?"
Joshu said, "A maiden with her hair rolled up, pregnant."

Author/Translator's Note -

The purity of the "impure" surpasses that of the "pure." A
mother cannot be a virgin, but how can a virgin ever be a mother?
