There's no problem making things up in the non-state state of zen, because it is simply the pivotal function which Zhaozhou calls 本份事 - our own original share of the business. Why else would you want to rely on other things?
The problem is not with making things up. The problem is with dishonesty - people stating their own opinion yet denying they are making it up by claiming it is a statement of zen authority backed up with lots of quotes.
And so here I am clearly making things up after being inspired by a quote of Wumen. Am I relying on zen authority? Hahaha.
