From Cleary's scholarship fail Sayings of Zen Like By Cleary
In recent times there is anohter kind of Zen master who enjoys fame for twenty or thirty years just telling people not to pay attention to the sayings of others, calling this "passing through sound and form."
When they are asked about the east, they answer about the west, considering that "expression beyond convention". Passing on this warped understanding, they have thus confused and damaged Zen teaching, fooling and deluding younger generations.

ewk book note index - So, we all know by now that Dogen was a fraud and a liar, and when he claimed that Bodidharma was facing a wall to practice Zazen prayer-meditation, that was a lie. But what was Bodidharma doing then? Huangbo says he was facing a wall in order to not lead people into a false understanding. D.T. Suzuki argued, based on a fragment of text, that Bodidharma was practicing "mind like a straight standing wall".
So, what exactly is a "warped understanding"? What is it that Bodidharma passed on?
