Master Xuansha said to an assembly,
"People of the present do not understand the principle herein, and mistakenly get involved in things and sense objects, getting influenced everywhere, getting bound up everywhere. Even if you awaken, sense data and objects still profuse; names and descriptions are not real. Then you try to freeze your mind, rein in thoughts, reduce phenomena to emptiness, shut your eyes, break off thoughts as they arise again and again, and suppress subtle thinking as soon as it arises. Views like this are characteristic of outside ways that fall into nihilism, dead people whose ghosts have not yet departed, dark and vague, unaware, unknowing, covering your eyes to steal a bell, uselessly fooling yourself. If you discriminate here, it is not so."
I'm gonna guess even in Xuansha's time there was still annoying stuff going on, like Buddhist persecutions, famine, no uber or Netflix, or good pot, so people got themselves all in a tizzy about sense and data objects.
Now, a person might say, "Well doesn't meditation help me prevent from mistakenly getting involved in sense and data objects" and I'd be like, "Probably, until you turn that meditation into a sense and data object itself as a means to religious enlightenment", and then they think we got beef! Do you think they're all aware the concept of "meditation" as they 'know' it has been entirely contrived by the mind they're trying to pacify? Hopefully? IDK man.
