Tzu-te on the mistake of meditation

This is Tzu-te Hui... a guy who saw the original five ox pictures; quoted from Cleary's book, "Zen Sayings Found Somewhere".

As I see people pursuing the path today, none of them seem to be in accord with it. Why is this so? Some of them control their minds to make them settled within, others gather in their thoughts to induce stabilization. All of them are fabrications. In reality, this is not inner mastery at all.

If they are able to want to see, these people have to turn around this mindless state; would they have no understanding? This is why scripture says, "Bodhisattvas entering concentration are not yet free of the phenomenon of this concentration."

Scripture also says, "Having realized the purity of hte realm of reality by permanent detachment through laborious meditation, that understanding of purity then becomes self-obstruction. You should know there is an even deeper mind."

.

ewk book note index - It's not just that Zen Masters disagree with Buddhists and meditation cultists, it's that Zen Masters say there is something else altogether. Or rather, not just Zen Masters, but the very texts Buddhists and meditation cultists claim as the basis for religious authority. Well, what do they say now?
