From Cleary's translation:
You must detach from forms and labels before you can learn the way. When your learning reaches the effortless knowledge that is not learned, the path is not a fixed path- the mind itself is the buddha-mind. Maximum capacity becomes accessible; not from formal externals, but experienced directly. -P'u-an

Beyond the Gate
靈光不昧 The celestial radiance undimmed,
萬古徽猷 The norm lasting for ever more;
入此門來 For him who entereth this gate,
莫存知解 No reasoning, no learning.

ewk book note index - The phrase "direct experience" is often thrown about in this forum, particularly by people who refuse to talk about the texts that describe how this "direct experience" is taught, obtained, and manifest. When I hear somebody say "direct experience", often they mean "direct experience by means of." How is that direct?
