A phenomenon, a little philosophy and Zen

We all know what it's like to focus our attention.

Remember that one time when you were so focused on what you were doing that you didn't even hear it when your name was spoken?

It's interesting how that works.

When you focus your attention on a thing then that thing becomes clearer. You see it better, more deeply. And everything else sorta disappears.

It's pretty amazing when you think about it.

What do you suppose is disappeared right now? What sights, sounds and thoughts? What other weird stuff?

How would you know?

Also, if something was disappeared, how would you make it reappear?

You couldn't do it by focusing. What would you focus on?

You'd have to do something else. Some other thing.

That's what we do in Zen. We mess with focus and that other thing.
