The Problem With Quoting Zen Masters

Zen is not an object of understanding, as it originates beyond the mind. It cannot be discussed or explained, only demonstrated. Such a demonstration is a direct transmission for the student who is able to receive it, as it is also received beyond the mind.

This is the key: when the masters spoke words, those words demonstrated Zen. They did not explain it. This is because, again, Zen arises from beyond the mind. When someone here, who is not Zen, quotes Zen masters in order to explain Zen, but at the same time cannot demonstrate it, there is no direct transmission. The quote loses all power.
