◆ Fellow-Practitioner's Sharing : ----- ※ "Non-abiding" and simultaneous "arising the mind" indicate not to "abide in" (i.e. attach to) any subjective or objective phenomena, and simultaneously not to negate the conditional arising and perishing of all phenomena. In dealing with everyday activities, once Suddenness Chan practitioners can maintain the mind of non-abiding awareness in every moment, they are then able to realize that all experiences of ordinary life are Chan. Therefore, it is no wonder that Layman Pang (?-808) would have accepted carrying water and moving firewood in daily life as being exactly the spiritual powers and their subtle functions.
※ For the wisdom-eye of the ultimately enlightened Chan practitioner who realizes "Chan is arising the mind with non-abiding", in looking at worldly forms, all the myriads of phenomena have their own positions, conditions and perspectives; and within the unified harmony, all the individually different phenomena are not missing. Consequently, even if thousands of myriads of phenomena appear simultaneously before the practitioner, he or she will not be confused and disturbed by them, and will be able to render appropriate responses in just the right way.
The sharings placed here with permission from Venerable Guohan William Tsao, Dharma successor to the late Chan Master Sheng Yen.
