Best way to describe Zen to someone who thinks Zen is just "being peaceful and calm and shit"

As the tittle says, I have a friend who think zen is what is shown on "zen" calenders, facebook memes or cards. I don't have the wisdom to yet put it into words and am asking for some help. Thanks
