Socrates often said that he had nothing to teach and that he was not wise and knew (almost) nothing. This is a common theme with a lot of zen masters I hear quotes by.
But more importantly, when speaking with people who felt they knew a lot, Socrates showed them that they didn't really know as much as they thought. And what little they did know was absurd.
One tool he used to do this was defining the terms they were discussing and eventually showing that the words and ideas we use to conceptualize reality are woefully insufficient, another common zen theme.
So was Socrates accidentally teaching Zen? At least in part?
