Perhaps I don't understand the dharma well enough, but...

Did zen masters just think "what's the quickest, most cryptic answer/comment I can possibly give right now?" Because sometimes I seriously think it must have been either that, or "I'm gonna do some random thing, and maybe people will interpret it."

I speak mostly of koans, of course, which I realize can be fictional/exaggerated (are probably usually so), not to mention translated from old old texts. But seriously, think about it:

"Hey Zhaozhou."

"Hey Nansen."

"So I cut a cat in half today, because no one could convince me not to."

Zhaozhou puts sandal on head and leaves

"Man, if only you were there to do that earlier, then maybe I wouldn't have to kill a cat."

Or let's not forget the time Gutei Osho cut off a kids finger. He became enlightened, sure, but that was not necessary, surely.

Perhaps I'm too literal in my thinking. Well, I'm a very literal thinker, and it makes these things a little harder to grasp.
