Buddha teaches that all attainments are conditional and karmic. Fair enough. That does NOT stop me from wanting to hold enlightenment within my hands. I DESIRE to posses the family treasure like a bauble that I can fondle and wear publicly at the adoration and jealousy of others.
Why lie? Why play games?
I've long held distaste for this digital place, /r/zen. I've felt jealousy for the sanghas in the koans because at least back then there WAS a flesh and blood master to be beheld and reckoned with. What do we have here? A swarm of neophytes all complimenting and insulting each other. Is there a master of /r/zen? I've never been confused about that--there is not.
But today is a new day!
This morning while I was drinking my coffee and browsing /r/zen and playing a bit of chess it occurred to me that I'd never meet a zen master here and that I was obviously not one of the 1/3,000,000 who was capable of awakening upon my own cognizance. That thought made me frustrated. Sad.
Then eureka!
Tell me, what is writing? It is telepathy. To read words is to share headspace with people across all time and distance. If I say imagine a white rabbit upon a red velvet covered table, POOF! There is a rabbit upon a red velvet table. True, our minds may shape the minor details. Your rabbit may be floppy-eared and fat or lithe and with pink eyes. No matter. We are sharing a vision in mind.
And my miracle did not happen I realized it had already happened. I've not only met a master, I'VE MET SEVERAL.
JOSHU
HUANGBO
HUINENG
BODHIDHARMA
The list goes on. I have met them in my mind, which is your mind....or simply MIND.
What a wonderful feeling of care that surrounds me as I admit I am not alone in my endeavor. None of us are. The only way to be alone is to choose to be. Come in from the darkness and meet the master when you are ready. They do not wait for you, they have never left you.
